This summer is filled with great new books. I've read some fantastic books over the past few months - here are my personal picks for this summer. Happy Reading! Lisa
The Madonnas of Echo Park is an extraordinary debut. He brings the neighborhood of Echo Park in Los Angeles alive: from busboys to day laborers and housekeepers, the reader gets an incredible inside view of the Mexican American community in Echo Park. Interwoven stories could stand alone, but create a powerful novel.
I've loved Joshilyn Jackson since the minute I started Gods in Alabama several years ago. I think she's gotten better in this latest novel. Using a minor character from her first novel, Gods in Alabama, Jackson's latest novel takes the reader on a journey across the country. Rose Mae is a character that draws you in, makes you laugh and has you rooting for her. A great summer read!
Ok, so I usually can figure out what's happened about halfway through a mystery. Not with this one. Sophie Hannah has woven such a complex and mystifying novel, it will keep you not only guessing, but literally trying to wrap your head around what could possibly be going on. Ruth Bussey is a woman with a secret past. Her boyfriend, Aidan Seed, also has a secret that he shares with her: that he killed a woman named Mary Trelease years ago. The catch? Ruth knows Mary Trelease and she is alive. And so begins a tale that will keep you reading late into the night...
Lily King's latest book is an exploration of a daughter's rocky relationship with her father. The main character strives to have a relationship with her alcoholic and narcissistic father. I found the book emotionally engrossing and very compelling.
For those who've already gobbled up the dragon tattoo series and are looking for more Scandinavian mystery, The Ice Princess is an excellent choice.
The title of Brady Udall's latest sounds like a misnomer. What an incredibly entertaining book. The "lonely polygamist" has four wives and dozens of kids, and no one to confide in. Told from several viewpoints, we are brought into this family's world and their struggles, heartbreaks and joys.
